Ines Bautista-Yao is the author of One Crazy Summer, What’s in your Heart, and Only a Kiss. I received an ecopy of this book for review purposes only. My opinion is my own. 

It took me sometime to get into Only A Kiss at the beginning because it was being told from the POV of a very young character (Katie and Chris were 8 years old).  

I had to remind myself a few times of this fact while proceeded through the first chapter of the story "Only A Kiss".  While it did take some time I did enjoy seeing the friendship between Katie and Chris at this young age. You could tell that they truly cared about one another. Katie has decided that she will be marrying Chris's older brother Ethan so she is determined to find a girl that Chris can marry so he will be happy. Katie seeks out a girl in their class and attempts to have her chose Chris to marry, however, thing don't go the way Katie plans.

The next chapter of the story, "Nobody Needs to Know" picks up with Chris and Katie now freshmen in high school and attending different schools. Chris forms a relationship with an upperclassman and this effects his friendship with Katie. This story shows how Katie will always be there for Chris regardless of the situation. It tells a story of heartbreak and the bond of friends. 

The next chapter of the story, "Just Always Remember" takes place the summer before their senior year. Katie has gone on vacation with her family and Chris has stayed back in their home town. This portion of the story reflects on a relationship between Katie and a guy she meets on vacation. It tells how Chris genuinely misses her and helps him reflect on his womanizing ways. 

The next chapter of the story, "Making My Way" takes place their sophomore (maybe junior, I don't remember it specifying) year of college. Katie, Chris and their old friends are now attending the same college. Katie is still dating the guy she met at the beach and Chris has stayed away from girls as a promise to Katie (after he serial dated a bunch of girls in high school). Chris is hiding his true feelings for Katie, whom he realized 3 years ago he is actually in love with. Katie talks about getting married and Chris is quick to question her. 

The final chapter of the story, "Like Nobody Else" wraps up 3 years after the previous chapter. Katie sees Chris for the first time in years since he moved to study in Australia after a fight between them. Everything concludes to a sweet ending. They have you rooting for them from the beginning.

Overall, I enjoyed this book. There were many, many years packed into it and I felt they were brought back at appropriate times. While I liked seeing their relationship from an early age I felt like it could have started when they were older. I can only imagine significant events were skipped over just because they weren't part of the time frame that was being written at that moment. I was loving the connection between Katie and Chris. How they could always rely on each other for anything. I was totally pulling for them to end up together! There were just some points where this book fell short for me but it was good and I'm glad I read it.

To Outline or Not to Outline

I attend writer’s conferences and this is one of the most common questions put to best-selling authors—and the answers may surprise you. I am an electrical engineer by training. It would never occur to me to build a circuit or a device without a circuit diagram and blue prints. So when I started writing my first novel, it was natural for me to outline. The outline is the architectural plan of the book. When completed, it reveals flaws, holes in the plot, and allows correction at an early stage of the writing process before hundreds of pages and hours have been committed.

When asked this question, some writers say they use a five-page outline, others develop a 150-page proto-book detailing every scene. But some will tell you that they don’t outline at all. That they want to be as surprised as the audience when they get to a plot twist. They would be bored writing off of a template where they already know what is going to happen next. God bless them, but I don’t advise it. Also, I can tell when an author is pretty much winging it. Coincidence crops up, implausibility abounds—all hallmarks of a writer who has not given long and careful thought to his story.

Surprising yourself does not imply surprising the reader any more than crying while singing a love song elicits emotion in the listener. Surprise in drama is very deliberate and premeditative and rarely the result of spontaneity. So unless you are a literary Mozart and can improvise brilliantly, I would suggest using an outline. Start with the pitch, the essence of the story, then write a one-page synopsis. Then an outline which may simply consist of a list of scenes without development. Keep in mind that for today’s thrillers, the chapters are much shorter than they were when The Godfather was written. Now you need six to ten-page chapters and the outline can assist greatly in establishing that rhythm. You can see how evenly distributed your plot twists and cliff hangers are and make adjustments so that all the tension is not concentrated in one section of the book while the rest of the manuscript is a snooze.

Did Michelangelo paint the Sistine Ceiling without drawings? Did Da Vinci paint the Madonna without sketching Her first? If an outline was good enough for those guys, it’s good enough for you.

He spent a decade in the defense industry working on the F-14 fighter jet and classified electronics projects. After the fall of the Soviet Union, many thought America wouldn't need weapons anymore, so while others waited for the peace dividend, he moved on to the financial sector in New York where he is currently a network engineer. His passions include violin, travel to exotic places and exploring worldwide conspiracies. He lives in New Jersey where he is working on his third novel. I know what I have to do.

I leave a note on my bed for Jabori, telling him to continue looking for Ronny

tomorrow morning.

My dad is slumped over, sleeping at his desk. I kiss his forehead and then grab the

gun my dad has hidden in his desk drawer. I pack some clothes and then sneak out through

the crack in the latrine.

In a hurry, I walk to the cliff. I am careful not to fall on the slippery rocks.

I glance down, baffled at how high the drop down the cliff is.

“Okay, okay,” I say, as I try lamely to psych myself up for the jump.

I turn to look back. No one is chasing me, but I feel my heart racing.

 I take a deep, purposeful breath and turn back to look down at the drop again, half

hoping that my eyes are playing a trick on me and that maybe the drop is a mere two feet.

Nope, they are not.

Jumping in this water is a crazy idea, but it is what I have to do. It’s this or a two-day

hike down the mountain. It really doesn’t matter because both ways could kill me.

I survey the lake. The top layer of water is iced over from the freezing temperatures.

To make matters worse, there are jagged rocks flanking the river. Like Darius said, I have to

get a running start so I don’t hit the rocks or snags on my way down.

I push my fears aside and grab the gun from my back. I shoot into the water to break

up the ice.

I walk back from the cliff. I take a couple of purposeful breaths and then run full speed

toward the edge. Once near the edge, I leap high in the air and begin my quest to get to the

moon to save my dad.

And if I die, so be it.

2008

“THE SHOW’S AT FIFTY-SEVENTH AND Seventh. Here’s your press badge and mini mic. If you see anyone, just be casual, make chit-chat, see what they think of the show. We’ve heard Amber Donovan may be there, but nothing’s confirmed. Just try to blend in, have some drinks. It starts at five thirty. Oh, and remember...you’re Anna Creel.”

Right. My first assignment! I never thought it would involve false aliases and conversational spying for Glitter magazine, but...my first assignment! At New York City’s Fashion Week nonetheless. Something I had absolutely no experience or serious interest in, but I wouldn’t have to worry about that tonight. I’d be Anna Creel. She knows all about the fashion in-crowd. Right?

“Isn’t Anna...?” I started to ask my boss, Liz. “She’s our fashion and beauty editor,” Liz replied. Right. Then why isn’t she...
“We have too many shows booked this week. She already has Malandrino and Posen tonight. She doesn’t have time for Isla Dominici. Just smile and keep your eyes and ears open when you get there. Be yourself!”

“As Anna Creel,” I muttered.
“Right!”
Liz was friendly. Maybe not one hundred percent genuine, but this was Glitter after all. You don’t get to be chief editorial assistant of the country’s biggest and most popular celebrity magazine by being your real self. I’d heard she was a Manhattan import, just like myself, but from some little town in Michigan. She hid it relatively well. No accent, three-inch stilettos, a skin-tight suit dress, and a conspicuously obvious D&G belt can make anyone look like a tried and true New York power woman. But Liz was plumper and didn’t look quite as polished as some of the other reporters, and she spoke with a monotone, to-the-point voice, all of which kept her from entirely fitting the Glitter mold. If I ever needed someone in the office to watch my back, I knew Liz, with our shared outsider origins, could do the job.

Watch my back? At Glitter? I couldn’t believe I was thinking so ruthlessly. But this place was cutthroat. I could tell after only a few days. (I bet the editorial assistant underlings at Martha Stewart Living weren’t so fearful. On second thought...maybe they were.) You didn’t advance at Glitter through sheer hard work and determination, and it certainly didn’t involve climbing the traditional corporate ladder. Getting the scoop—or the source—was your most important job function. Even if it meant seducing the married hunk who’s on the number-two-ranked drama on television.

“If something like that were to happen...and of course it does not... We obviously don’t condone that kind of behavior here,” Liz had told the other two EAs and myself after the office gossip broke on my second day. “But that wasn’t me.”

To get to the top of the hottest weekly celeb rag, apparently the rules of deception were the rules of the game. Anna Creel I would be then, for tonight at least.

Chapter One

Late. So late. I slam the car door behind me and race across the parking lot. My hair is tangled in the strap of my messenger bag, my shoes are untied, and I have no idea how I’m going to get to my locker without getting caught. I have to try because I need those chemistry notes.

Technically I needed them last night when I’d actually had the time to study for my midterm, but I didn’t think it was a big deal. I know the materials and I figured I could do a little last-minute cramming during first period homeroom. It was a decent plan until my phone battery died, taking my morning alarm down with it. Now I’ll be lucky to catch the last ten minutes of first period.

I hop the curb and slow as I slide into the shadow of the ancient brick school. It’s probably not classy to barrel through the door like an escaped convict. Of course, it probably wasn’t classy flying into the parking lot doing Mach 2 either.

I check my barely charged phone for the time as I climb the first step. My foot slips on something halfway up the stairs. It’s like hitting a patch of ice. I lunge gor the handrail and jerk myself upright, glaring down at the thing that tripped me –a dropped notebook.

Nothing special. It’s a plain, spiral-bound pad, the kind you can get at the drugstore for less than a buck. Pretty much worthless, excerpt I know it’s probably chock-full of notes. Notes seomone will need during midterm week. 

Oh, fine.

I snatch the notebook off the steps and shove it into my bag. Lost and Found is going to have to wait though. It’s in the student store, which is on the opposite side of the school.

“You’ll  forgive  me  that  easily?”  I  asked,  looking  up.  

King’s  smile  changed  the  way  I  viewed  him.  His  face  was   more  than  handsome  to  me.  His  face  was  still  one  of  the  few  things   left  besides  Maddie’s  smile  that  comforted  me  anymore.  “I  forgive   you,  have  forgiven  you,”  he  said.  “I’ve  known  you  a  long  time,  Rae,   and  I  would  like  to  know  you  forever.  People  who  care  about  one   another  forgive  each  other.”  

“Friends  forgive  each  other?”  I  asked.  

King  tapped  the  side  of  his  wineglass  with  his  finger.   “Friends  and  people  who  love  each  other.”  

Unable  to  figure  out  which  category  he’d  fit  me  into  in  his   life,  I  just  smiled  back  at  him.  Then  I  picked  up  my  fork  again  and   took  a  bite.  “This  is  delicious.  Thank  you.”  

“Does  this  mean  you’ll  let  me  cook  for  you  again?”  

“Oh,  yeah,  I  could  definitely  get  used  to  this.”  I  took  a  drink   of  wine.  

King  studied  me  closely,  smiling.  “So  could  I.  I  hope  you   stay,  RaeAnne.”  

I  coughed  from  the  wine  and  set  down  my  glass.  “Spend  the   night?”  

The  color  in  King’s  face  deepened  as  he  leaned  back  in  his   chair.  “That’s  not  what  I  meant.  I  meant  I  hope  you’ll  stay  in  Cider   Town.”  

“For  good?”  

King  nodded.  

“We’ll  see,”  I  said.  

“That’s  all?”  

I  sighed,  then  sipped  some  wine.  “There’s  more  than  me  I   have  to  think  about.  I  have  to  do  what’s  best  for  Maddie.”  

“Returning  to  the  city  and  not  seeing  her  grandfather  as   much  as  she  could  is  best  for  her?”  

I  slammed  the  wineglass  on  top  of  the  table,  the  liquid   sliding  over  the  top.  “Oh,  no,  your  mama’s  tablecloth.  King,  I’m  so   sorry.”  I  mopped  the  spill  with  the  dinner  napkin  as  King  rose  to   help  me.  “And  now  I  probably  ruined  your  napkin,  too,”  I  said,   crumpling  it  in  my  hand.

King  gently  took  the  wet  dinner  napkin  from  me.  “It’s  all   right,  Rae.”  

I  felt  tears  warming  my  face.  King  put  down  the  napkin  on   the  table  and  pulled  me  close  to  him.  Pressing  my  face  into  his   chest  through  his  soft  shirt,  I  gazed  up  at  him,  and  I  no  longer  saw   the  boy  I  knew  while  we  were  growing  up  together.  His  jaw  had   defined  and  hardened.  Even  the  beautiful  green  in  his  eyes  had  a   steely  edge.  He’d  always  been  endearing,  and  in  high  school  he’d   gotten  handsome.  Yet  now  just  the  sound  of  his  voice  saying  my   name  could  calm  me.  It  was  then  I  knew  I  loved  him,  too.  

“King?”  

He  looked  down  at  me.  “What  is  it?”  

“What’s  next?”  

“How  about  we  watch  a  movie?”  

“Sounds  good.”  I  leaned  against  him  once  more,  then  he   took  my  hand  in  his  and  we  went  over  to  the  couch  in  front  of  his   TV.

Firstly, I’d just like to say that this is an awesome topic, and I’d like to thank Ashley for setting me such a cool challenge. Writing this list has been very thought-provoking, and involved some interesting debate in the Davis’ household! When you start thinking about technological and medical advancements, it is amazing to realize how much society has, and will, achieve over the course of one person’s lifetime. Awe-inspiring. Here is my ten cents worth:

10. Self-drive cars with centralized tracking systems: This one is the easiest to predict, and we are already moving towards this goal. Think no more taxi’s (sorry taxi drivers – I think it is time to start retraining), no need for designated drivers and no restrictions on bringing your car with you on a night out.

9. Early medical detection: In True Calling being supremely healthy is of vital concern to the new government, to ensure the continuation of humanity. Medicets (specialist robots) and the Vita chip implants monitor individual health on a daily basis. This is something I’d like to see in my lifetime, as there is so much needless suffering that could be prevented. There’s no question that breakthroughs in genetic engineering will help us treat or eliminate a whole range of diseases in the future.

8. Fingerprint and Retinal ID as standard to help eliminate identity theft and remove the need for cash and credit cards when shopping.

7. Everyone is a Fashion Designer: Customizable computer programmes that allow us to create our own clothing range; that would be pretty cool, right? Imagine you could log into your computer and plug in what you want - colour, material, texture, style, size. Uploading your image would enable you to view how the end product will look. Then you just click a button, and your design is manufactured and shipped.

6. Family Robots will become the new family pets, only much more useful as they attend to our needs, rather than the other way around. I am already salivating at the prospect of more time to write, and never having to clean the oven/shower/toilet again.

5. Automated exercise: I’d like to be around when they develop a machine/robot/computer that exercises my body while I sleep. You are starting to see a pattern here, yeah? It’s not that I’m lazy, more that I aspire to be lazy—so I can sit at my desk transcribing the stories from my head, and not have to worry about anything else in my life because modern day living already takes care of that.

4. Targeted Medical Programmes: Individual genetic code is harnessed to customize medical programmes that a) cure individual illnesses and b) help prevent genetic illness passing from generation to generation.

3. Extend our lifetimes: Stem cell research is apparently making great progress, and it is quite possible that we will be able to increase our lifespan. I’d like to be around to meet my great-great grandchildren, but only if this life extension programme can also halt the aging process. Because who’d want to look at a 150-year-old face otherwise?

2. Commercial space travel: I really want to holiday beyond this world, and I can think of nothing more incredible than looking down at Earth as we rocket to our 5-star holiday village in outer space. Epic.

1. Eat all you want without gaining weight: I am pinning all my hopes on this one!! He, he!! I am hopeful that some super drug will be created, or genetic modification programme developed, which allows me to stuff my face and remain a skinny-minnie at the same time. Super shallow, I know, but I am nothing if not honest.
