Review: Boomerang | Noelle August

Boomerang (Boomerang #1)
by Noelle August
Published July 8th 2014
by William Morrow Paperbacks

Goodreads Summary:

Welcome to Boomerang.com, the dating site for the millennial gen with its no-fuss, no-commitments matchups, and where work is steamier than any random hook-up.

Mia Galliano is an aspiring filmmaker. Ethan Vance has just played his last game as a collegiate soccer star. They’re sharp, hungry for success, and they share a secret.

Last night, Ethan and Mia met at a bar, and, well . . . one thing led to another, which led to them waking up the next morning—together. Things turned awkward in a hurry when they found themselves sharing a post hookup taxi . . . to the same place: Boomerang headquarters.

What began as a powerful connection between them is treated to a cold shower courtesy of two major complications. First, Boomerang has a strict policy against co-worker dating. And second, they’re now competitors for only one job at the end of summer.
As their internships come to an end, will they manage to keep their eyes on the future and their hands off each other, or will the pull of attraction put them right back where they started?

I really enjoyed this book! I was aware of it when it came out but it stayed off my radar until the second book was announced. I'm not a huge New Adult reader but this book is an exception to that!

There is immediate conflict between Ethan and Mia when they both realize they are going to the same place after a night they can't really remember and don't want to forget! Hot and steamy from the very beginning.

The chemistry between these two is undeniable, even though they try their best to avoid it.

When they are advised that they have to go on dates with members of the site themselves, things change dramatically. Sabotage, betrayal, and jealousy come quickly. Leaving lasting marks.

You'll find yourself pulling for Mia and Ethan. Hoping that they can come to some compromise and be together!

I'm excited for the second book in the Boomerang series! Look for my review of Rebound on 3/2 on the blog!

About the Author
I have been an avid reader and and writer since my earliest school days. Reading was my first and earliest passions, often seeking the safe sanctuary of my room or the library to read everything I could. My favorite has been romance. I penned some romantic poetry in high school and was winning school awards for my short stories when I was just 16. In college I would hibernate in the library for days at a time, consuming every short story and novel I could find. My diploma says Bachelors in English Lit. which I'm very proud of.

I probably drink too much coffee and eat too much junk food, but to compensate do like running when the weather is nice. I love shopping in the mall even if I never find what I'm looking for. I'm a hopeful romantic who prefers novels with a happy ending.

 EXCERPT

By the time I’d examined his tanned calves, the masculinity of his skin was lingering in the air between us. He smelt sensational, and I found myself uncontrollably breathing in as I rose.
Now curious to see more, I kept going. But as I began to move, an odd sensation of warmth radiating from him came over me; it was almost like an invisible hand caressing my skin. My heart fluttered at the idea of it, and suddenly blood was rushing to all the wrong places as I felt an unexpected thrill of anticipation.

After tracing his body all the way up to his chest, my wandering eyes didn’t seem to want to stop, and they were soon up to his neck and following the stubble along his jaw, right up to his light brown hair.

And then he spoke. The sound of his voice jolted me from my daydream and pulled my gaze to his.

“Addison!” I gasped as our eyes collided.

From the moment the name left my lips, my eyes widened ... stared... and became lost in his. As a rush of airy weightlessness floated me from the floor, suddenly everything felt more enhanced, more real, like something inside me had suddenly woken up.

It was an intoxicating feeling and the longer I stood entranced, the further his beautiful blue eyes reached into mine. Somehow they were knocking on the door to my heart, stirring something so powerful it made me want to cry and laugh at the same time and, for a brief second, there was something in his eyes that made me feel complete.

Suddenly his brows squeezed then softened. “Ah ... um ... sorry about the electric shock.” He smiled. “But who’s Addison?”

My throat tightened as warmth flushed my cheeks. Who the hell was Addison?

Embarrassment pulled my eyes from his. “Oh,” I said, choking on my words, “Um ... ah ... no ... I don’t know anyone called Addison ... I mean, um ... ”

“Oh!” He smiled cheekily as he leaned towards me and whispered.

“You sounded so convinced I was him ... I thought for a second I could be. I mean, if you wanted me to be.”

My face shot back to his, words jamming in my throat as I stared. Who was this guy, this stranger? In just a few seconds he’d turned my soul inside out, and now he was charming me with his words as well.
As his lips rose into a smile, I couldn’t help but smile back. But panic quickly returned to my constricted throat as that name re-entered my head.

Suddenly aware of the warmth still creeping across my face, I managed to pull my eyes from his again and divert my gaze. Addison, Addison, who the hell was Addison? I couldn’t budge the name from my thoughts.

As I stood fidgeting, I could feel him staring, waiting for me to say something, anything. After taking a breath, I shifted my gaze and we locked eyes again as I spoke. “Um,” I said, swallowing hard, “I must be
mistaken ... sorry.”

Genres: New AdultRomance

Synopsis

Tyler Morgan grew up a star athlete and scholar, but a tragedy he hasn’t dealt with has him regrouping in his home town of South Lake Tahoe. The last person he expects to see is Mira, the girl he lost his virginity to in high school, and the only woman who ever took a piece of his heart. To ensure Mira remains in his past where she belongs, Tyler agrees to look out for her temporarily until she’s safe enough to move out on her own. And if he has to push that process along by snooping around and figuring out what she’s hiding, he’ll do that too. Only, Mira is still beautiful, and she’s feisty as hell, and she has all his attention—just like she did six years before.
Mira is driving Tyler crazy, the tension between them off the charts while they’re trapped under the same roof. Something is going to crack. Will it be Mira’s last hold on a haunted life, or Tyler’s self-control around the one girl he’s never been able to get over?

Excerpt:
I was six. Summer. A hot one. I spent every day outdoors, back and forth between my house and my neighbor, Josh’s. I stopped, one time, on the path between our houses, the one with the spaced pavers, squatting, gathering a bunch of his mom’s poppies, until I felt tickles on my legs. Scurries and stops. I looked down; my feet and legs were covered in red ants.
I said nothing, didn’t move, my fear and surprise shocking me into stillness. Until Josh came around the corner. He saw my legs, the ants that would bite, bite, bite. The scared girl. “Don’t move,” he said. “They won’t bite if you don’t move.”
He ran off, but in that moment, the ants were real and I was real and my skin was real and vulnerable and going to be eaten completely.
I screamed. Screamed and writhed and the ants poked and pinched at my feet and legs and hands as I swiped at them. Josh came back with the hose and sprayed me down as I danced and screamed. Then he held my hand and sat by me as I cried while my mom rubbed medicated lotion on my skin.
#
Things felt different this side of campus. After all, the last time Chelsea was seen was at a frat party. Police cars were parked at intervals along the road. They talked with guys coming out of their houses, making notes on little notepads. My chest clenched as I realized the killer could be one of them. A cold rush of fear dashed through my veins. Why had I come over here alone? I stopped in front of the Triangle House, prepared to turn back, but paused.
I only knew one person in the Engineering, Science and Architecture frat: Josh. Just as I thought his name, the Triangle door opened and a tall, slenderly muscled boy strode out like he hadn’t a care in the world. He stopped at the top of the steps when he saw me standing on the sidewalk, his expression composed. His hazel eyes flickered in the sunlight. He hitched his backpack up his shoulder, his fitted tee bunching up slightly to reveal the bottom of his toned abs.
Abs I knew well. A body that had, once upon a time, made mine sing. Whose touch sent shivers down my spine and woke up all my senses. I took an involuntary step forward. If he noticed the way he still affected me, after all these years, he didn’t let on. He came down the stairs, said a quick, “Hey, Katie,” and brushed past me.
So much for the kid with the hose.

EXCERPT
Jessica

The girls stayed until four in the morning, and they only left because, according to our neighbors, we were making too much noise, which was true. We made chocolate popcorn, watched a tearjerker movie, and then sat on the back porch and talked—and laughed and yelled—for a long, long time.
“Thank goodness, Ryan told you about what happened,” Sophie said.
“Poor guy,” Rachel said. “He hasn’t been the same since you left.”
Slimy, thick guilt took over my heart. It hadn’t left me by Sunday evening or Monday morning, and it was because of that guilt that I called Mama in the afternoon and asked her to bake a special Devil’s Food cake. After work, I stopped by the house to retrieve it, and then drove back downtown.
I parked the truck behind the Mustang. As I expected, the garage was open and Ryan was leaning over the Harley in the same fashion he was a week ago. Damp hair, bare back, jeans, and boots.
I swallowed. Maybe it wasn’t such a good idea to come over after all. Before I could chicken out, Ryan turned around and saw me. His eyes widened at first, then narrowed into thin slits. He stood from his crouch as I opened the truck’s door and walked inside the garage.
“Hi,” I said, feeling incredibly lame.
“Hey.” He grabbed a towel from one of his toolboxes and wiped his hands.
“I-I brought you this.” I extended the cake toward him.
His eyebrows shot up. “Devil’s Food cake.”
“Yes. It used to be your favorite.”
“It still is.”
“Good.” Seeing as he wouldn’t take it from me, I stepped to the side, and left the cake on one of the worktables.
Ryan stared at me, his hazel eyes completely lost, and I returned the stare. I wasn’t sure what I was doing, but I wouldn’t back down. I would be here for him, even if he didn’t want me to.
I sat down on a stool next to his bike. “So, why haven’t you finished this one yet?”
He picked up the black shirt over one of the toolboxes, hiding his incredible physique, then crouched between the bike and me. “I did spend quite some time away.”
Damn, couldn’t I have touched a lighter subject? “Sorry,” I whispered.
Ignoring my apology, he continued, “Besides, I like working on it. If I finish too fast, I’ll have to find another one to play with.” My gaze shifted to the other bike, to his racing bike, destroyed against the wall. “I didn’t fix that one after the accident. It’s a good reminder of how stupid I can be.”
“Sorry,” I said again.
He shot me a hard stare. “Stop apologizing, Jessica.”
