Excerpt

I rush back up the dark stairwell, shoving the key into the doorknob. It takes a minute for the lock to click and I push myself inside the apartment, securing every lock and deadbolt. I can’t stay here in Hutchinson, Kansas any longer. Pulling my phone from my purse, I text Weston. Tatiana is here. It’s not safe for me. I grab the few belongings that have any value to me, sentimental or otherwise, and shove it into my shoulder bag, including the stolen silver necklace. It has value and if I’m forced on the run, I’ll need money to survive. I know. What did Weston mean he knew Tatiana is at the bar? Had he seen her? Is he there? What do you mean, you know? I type into the phone. If he saw her, why didn’t he warn me? I can’t go down out the front door and it’s only a matter of time until she finds me just a few feet away. I grow restless waiting for an answer. The  phone  buzzes  and  displays an  incoming  call  from  Weston. "Wes,  tell  me  you’re here." The only thing to do is hop in his car and drive into the night, far from Kansas. A female’s voice bubbles with laughter. "Oh he’s coming darling, but you should know he won’t get here in time. Amazing how easy it is to clone a phone number and steal his service. The advancements Stem Tech has made is encouraging."

But, as Adrian and Laia write to each other, friendship blossoms and secrets emerge. Laia finds comfort in Adrian’s letters confessing truths she’s kept hidden—even from those closest to her—like how lost she’s felt since her father’s death, her anxiety about graduation, and her fears about leaving her family and two best friends. Book Blitz & Giveaway: Slumber | Christy Sloat | @ChristySloat

Slumber banner

slumberSlumber by Christy Sloat
Genre: YA Fantasy
Not all princesses get their happily ever after…
They tell me I killed my boyfriend Phillip in cold blood. I stabbed him twenty one times. I’m only seventeen years old, and I am serving life in Spindle Ridge Asylum for the Criminally Insane.
I don’t remember killing him, so it’s really hard to believe I’m capable of murder. In fact I don’t remember anything before I came to Spindle Ridge, not even my boyfriend.
I can only grasp onto my realistic dreams while the madness of the asylum threatens to pull me under.  I dream I’m a beautiful princess and there is an evil faerie named Maleficent who is bent on my destruction. The dreams are the closest thing I have to memories of my life, except they aren’t real.
I’m crazy. I’m not a princess.
They’re the mad illusions of an irrational teenage girl, right?
They’ve assigned me a new doctor, and she says I can trust her, and that she’ll help me see the truth of who I really am.
When she arrived she brought a new patient, Sawyer, who is everything Spindle Ridge isn’t: exciting, mysterious and beautiful. He promises he’s here to rescue me. Trusting either of them frightens me.
Could it be possible that my dreams are more than just the imaginings of a delusional girl? Could they be truth?

Chapter 2
Dr. Altman

“The patient seems to be developing more symptoms. Her dreams are showing no improvement. May need to look into her medication and alter it slightly—”
            “Dr. Altman?”
Dr. Altman hit stop on his recorder as a nurse walked into his office.
“Ah, Nurse Mary, how can I help you?” he asked the nervous nurse standing in his doorway. She bit her lip as she opened the door further.
“I’m just checking on Rory’s progress. I was sent by the director,” she informed him.
He swiveled his chair around, looking out onto the grounds below. He had been working for the Spindle Ridge Asylum for one year now, and he was constantly asked about certain patients by the director. It’s a part of his job he was used to, yet normal routine would be the director waiting until he was done with his reports. He would then hand deliver them to the director and wait for her to schedule a meeting. This director had more say, an annoying approach. After each session with a patient, either Nurse Mary or one of the other many nurses came to his office and interrupted his recording sessions.
“Doctor, did I come at a bad time again?” Mary asked. She knew how impatient he could be. She stood there waiting for his reply.
Finally he turned his chair and stood up. He walked to Mary and patted her on the shoulder. “No. I’ll go to the director myself, Mary. Save you a trip.” Accordingly, he walked out the door and up the flight of stairs leading to the director’s office, leaving a confused Mary in his wake.
He reached the door of the director of the asylum. Her office sat on the top floor overlooking the ocean view that sits just outside the asylum walls. She, by far, had the best view of the place; even better than his view of the gardens. He knew she was unprepared for his arrival, but he knocked anyway.
“Come in, Mary, you idiot—” She stopped short seeing Dr. Altman at the door. “Oh, I am terribly sorry, Dr. Altman. Do come in.”
Dr. Malisa Fenwick, or Dr. M for short, was a tall woman with raven black hair that she kept pulled so tight that he feared for the safety of her eyes. She smiled at him. It was always a disturbing smile, never quite reaching her eyes.
“I came about my session with Rory; you wanted to know about it. So instead of sending nurses to my office, I will come to you,” he said matter-of-factly. “I feel it’s better this way.”
Her smile faded fast, and she nodded her head motioning for him to take a seat. He did but kept his eyes steady with hers. Dr. Altman was not scared of Dr. M, not for a second. The staff may flitter around her like scared little children, but he was a man of science and would not be intimidated by her.
“Well?” she said impatiently.
“Rory’s progress is slow. I can tell you that much right now. I was in the middle of my recordings when I was interrupted by Mary. I was going to give you the full report after lunch,” he explained.
“Peter, let’s be frank, shall we?” she asked even though she really didn’t want an answer. “Just tell me what your suggestion is.”
She sat back into her plush, white leather chair. It matched all the other pure white furniture in her office.
“Okay then, I think you have an unhealthy obsession with my patient,” he blurted. “You can’t wait for my official report, ever. It’s not fair to me as a doctor and it’s unfair to the patient.”
Dr. M stood fast, her chair flying out from behind her. She was mad and that anger had no problem reaching her eyes. They flared with hatred for him as he sat in front of her.
“How dare you come in here and diagnose me! You know what that girl did! I am merely keeping track of her progress. Progress that she is apparently not making, according to you.” Dr. M stopped, took a deep breath and continued. “I’m afraid that if you can’t make some sort of progress with that girl within two weeks’ time, I will be asking you to step down as her doctor. Do you understand?”
She said this as calmly as she could.
Dr. Altman’s face turned red with fury.
“You’d take her away from me after all this time? Do you know what that would do to her? What that would do to me? She trusts me!” he shouted.
“Dr. Altman, I’m not worried about her missing you when you’re no longer her doctor. I am, however, worried about whether or not she starts remembering why she is here in Spindle Ridge. It’s detrimental that the girl gets better and understands what she did to land herself here.”
“This is not a jail, Malisa. This is a hospital for the criminally insane. She doesn’t need to remember the awful things she did. She just needs to understand that what she did was criminal and the difference between right and wrong.”
“And you have two weeks to get her to do so. Now, Peter, leave my office and never come here unannounced again,” she said as she fixed her skirt and recovered her chair.
“I’ll do my best, Malisa.”
Just before he slammed her door he heard her say, “You’ll do your best or you’ll be sorry.”

Review: Jackaby | William Ritter

Jackaby (Jackaby #1)
by William Ritter
Published September 16th 2014
by Algonquin Young Readers

Goodreads Summary:

“Miss Rook, I am not an occultist,” Jackaby said. “I have a gift that allows me to see truth where others see the illusion--and there are many illusions. All the world’s a stage, as they say, and I seem to have the only seat in the house with a view behind the curtain.”

Newly arrived in New Fiddleham, New England, 1892, and in need of a job, Abigail Rook meets R. F. Jackaby, an investigator of the unexplained with a keen eye for the extraordinary--including the ability to see supernatural beings. Abigail has a gift for noticing ordinary but important details, which makes her perfect for the position of Jackaby’s assistant. On her first day, Abigail finds herself in the midst of a thrilling case: A serial killer is on the loose. The police are convinced it’s an ordinary villain, but Jackaby is certain it’s a nonhuman creature, whose existence the police--with the exception of a handsome young detective named Charlie Cane--deny.

Doctor Who meets Sherlock in William Ritter’s debut novel, which features a detective of the paranormal as seen through the eyes of his adventurous and intelligent assistant in a tale brimming with cheeky humor and a dose of the macabre.

The first reason that I even considered reading this book was because of the cover. I LOVE this cover. Then I looked it up on Goodreads, read the synopsis, saw some early reviews, then proceeded to add it to my TBR. I managed to get it at my local library and I'm SO glad I decided to read it.

I have not seen Doctor Who or Sherlock (nor read anything about the characters either). I know, I know, I'm missing out. haha So I legitimately can't compare Jackaby to either of them. Whether they are similar or not, I loved Jackaby.

The humor and the way that he and Abigail interact left me laughing out loud on multiple occasions. Mix in some paranormal investigation and this book had me easily. I've never enjoyed anything "historical" that I've ever read. That says a lot considering this takes place in 1892.

I am SO excited for book 2 now!
Beastly Bones (Jackaby #2) Expected publication: September 22nd 2015 !! :) Please hurry September!

ARC Review & Giveaway: My Heart and Other Black Holes | Jasmine Warga

My Heart and Other Black Holes
by Jasmine Warga
Expected publication: February 10th 2015
by Balzer & Bray/Harperteen

Goodreads Summary:
Sixteen-year-old physics nerd Aysel is obsessed with plotting her own death. With a mother who can barely look at her without wincing, classmates who whisper behind her back, and a father whose violent crime rocked her small town, Aysel is ready to turn her potential energy into nothingness.

There's only one problem: she's not sure she has the courage to do it alone. But once she discovers a website with a section called Suicide Partners, Aysel's convinced she's found her solution—Roman, a teenage boy who's haunted by a family tragedy, is looking for a partner. Even though Aysel and Roman have nothing in common, they slowly start to fill in each other's broken lives. But as their suicide pact becomes more concrete, Aysel begins to question whether she really wants to go through with it. Ultimately, she must choose between wanting to die or trying to convince Roman to live so they can discover the potential of their energy together.

I'm admittedly a sucker for a sob story. Something that will make me feel something. MH&OBH did not disappoint. Even though I didn't physically cry, I felt something the entire time. I felt myself a little in both Aysel and Roman. Both dealing with their own tragedies they both seek out a "suicide partner" on a website. They both believe choosing to commit suicide together increases the chance that they will actually do it.

Aysel is a nerd. No doubt. She equates much of the things in her life to a physics problem.

Roman is the high school basketball superstar. At least at one time he was.

While counting down to the decided date and location Aysel can't help but change her mind about committing this final act. She has to convince Roman to stay alive with her.

Heartbreaking accounts of past situations that have led them to this point in their lives.

This story is all consuming, depressing, and written perfectly. Thank you for this story Jasmine <3

Review: These Broken Stars (Starbound #1) by Amie Kaufman & Meagan Spooner

These Broken Stars (Starbound #1)
by Amie Kaufman & Meagan Spooner
Published December 10th 2013
by Disney Hyperion

Goodreads Summary:
It's a night like any other on board the Icarus. Then, catastrophe strikes: the massive luxury spaceliner is yanked out of hyperspace and plummets into the nearest planet. Lilac LaRoux and Tarver Merendsen survive. And they seem to be alone.

Lilac is the daughter of the richest man in the universe. Tarver comes from nothing, a young war hero who learned long ago that girls like Lilac are more trouble than they’re worth. But with only each other to rely on, Lilac and Tarver must work together, making a tortuous journey across the eerie, deserted terrain to seek help.

Then, against all odds, Lilac and Tarver find a strange blessing in the tragedy that has thrown them into each other’s arms. Without the hope of a future together in their own world, they begin to wonder—would they be better off staying here forever?

Everything changes when they uncover the truth behind the chilling whispers that haunt their every step. Lilac and Tarver may find a way off this planet. But they won’t be the same people who landed on it.

I'm not a huge sci-fi reader. It takes a lot to keep my attention in a sci-fi novel. It took only the first 5 pages to have me hooked in These Broken Stars (TBS).

First, I have to say... that cover is GORGEOUS! It admittedly was the reason I decided to purchase this ebook in the first place. And now I HAVE to buy a hardcover version to have on my bookshelf.

But onto the book itself. The dual POV used was brilliant. I loved knowing exactly what Lilac and Tarver were thinking/feeling. Their character development was very impressive. I felt myself rooting for them to survive together. Having each of them realize that there was more to the appearance they portray daily.

Having to survive on an abandoned planet without any real resources, they are tested time and time again. Physically, mentally and emotionally. They continuously help each other survive in such miserable conditions. Putting their own pain and injury aside to ensure they make it to their goal.

The authors did a great job describing every asset of the environment and weather they had to battle through. I felt like I was there watching it happen.

I couldn't have asked for more from this book. I loved it and it makes me want to pick up the second book in the series SO much sooner.

Thank you for a beautiful book Amie and Meagan <3

"It continues to astound me that this author has come up with something so completely original and interesting." Cynikat, Podiobooks reviewer.

EXCERPT
The two occupants were staring at each other in disbelief.
You’re a no-name!” said Diva, and took a step back.
And?” said Six, and took a step forward.
Don’t come near me!”
I was only going to offer you my hand!” Six said, plaintively.
I wouldn’t touch your grubby hand if I were drowning in a sea of Xianthan crocodiles!” snapped Diva.
Oh, So sorry, your mulchiness. If I could I would instantly remove my presence, but you may have noticed this cabin is for two, and we happen to be locked in.”
There must be some mistake. Kindly stay on your own side of the cabin!”
Listen, lady muck,”—the boy had the nerve to say—“if I want orders I shall give them myself, right? You might have lorded it over all and sundry on Coriolis, but that means nothing here, see?”
How dare you speak to me like that … you … you … nomus!”
The boy laughed in her face. “You are just an apprentice, like me, my lady, and you are going to have to get used to it.”
Diva looked aghast. “Surely they wouldn’t expect me to share a cabin with a no-name? They couldn’t!”
You haven’t heard me complaining about having to put up with you, now have you?” said the boy. “And you are not exactly my idea of a pleasant traveling companion.”
Diva drew herself up to her full height, a trick which usually served to intimidate.
The boy laughed again. “You remind me of a puffer eel faced with a giant crab! Nothing but air!” He moved his hands in front of him with a fake scared look. “Ooooooh!”
I,” she said with huge dignity, “am Divina Senate Magmus of Coriolis.”
Six executed a bow. “I,” he said, “guessed you would have some silly sort of name like that. Only have to look at you.”
My father is chief Elder of Mesteta on Coriolis!”
Well, he would be, wouldn’t he?”
She stared at him.
I mean,” he elaborated, “with you dressing like that … he would have to be.”
She frowned. “What is wrong with my garment? It is a Coriolan Ceremonious Robe.”
Bet you said that with capitals!”
I don’t understand you, boy!” she said haughtily.
My name is Six.”
What kind of a name is that?”
Well it sure beats yours,” he said. “At least nobody named me ‘Divine’!”
It’s ‘Divina’,” she told him severely.
Whatever.”
About The Author:

I am English, although I live in Spain now. I've worked at all sorts of things, but have been writing too, on and off, since I was little. I have always been passionate about cosmology and astrophysics, so it was exciting to be able to bring that aspect into the series.  I recently finished a masters in astronomy and astrophysics.

Valhai is the book I always wanted to write, but I got so involved with the characters myself that I simply had to go on writing about them, which turned a one-off novel into a series. I hope readers will identify with them and enjoy them too. I myself have been practically living in The Ammonite Galaxy for the last five years. It has become so real to me that I can almost touch it!

The books out so far in the series are:

Book One: Valhai
Book Two: Kwaide
Book Three: Xiantha
Book Four: Pictoria
Book Five: The Lost Animas
Book Six: The Namura Stone (published September 2014)
Book Seven:  The Trimorphs (to be published 2015)

Ammonite Planets is the omnibus edition of Books #1-3 and is exclusive to the Kindle store, and Ammonite Stars is the omnibus edition of Books #4-5, also exclusive to the Kindle store.
